“You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.” ~ Swami Vivekananda The journey of awakening is an ever-evolving process that really never stops unfolding. And because it is an ongoing process, and we are always changing and rising in consciousness, so does our perspective of our journey. For example, we may have read something that resonated with us intensely when we first began our journey only to revisit it later and feel either confused by it. (Which just means that the teaching has integrated into wisdom and is no longer something that can be perceived by us since we have become it), or we may actually get a clearer understanding of an old “truth” so to speak. So in all actuality, the “truth” (as we know it) actually changes as we do, and what may have been helpful to us at one point in our process, may become something that works against us once we have evolved past that stage. Because of this, it is important to revisit our spiritually based belief systems that may have formed over time to make sure we aren’t using something that was meant to be inspiring and guiding as something we blame ourselves for not getting “right” or to feel like we have failed at on our spiritual journey. Simply put, the higher one goes in consciousness should be in direct correlation of becoming a more open, expanded, and unconditionally loving person. Below are five commonly misunderstood spiritual teachings that may have veered us down the road of more judgment of ourselves or of our lives rather than the path of complete acceptance and embracing of our innocent nature. 1) “You create your own reality.” “You attract what you judge, until you stop judging what you attract.” ~ Matt Kahn The law of attraction is a very attractive concept to promote. “You mean I can just think new thoughts and magically get money, power, relationships when I want?” people think. However, what many soul’s who are new to such topics don’t realize is the process of the internal energetic shift that must take place prior to an external shift. So what the statement, “you create your reality,” really means is that you create how you perceive your reality, which is the initial step before conscious manifestation can take place. Many people are still seeing their life’s circumstances from a blessing/punishment/ “what did I do wrong to attract such a thing” viewpoint, but what you are actually doing is blaming yourself and your ‘faulty’ manifesting abilities for something that was actually there to serve you in your evolution of consciousness. Nothing ever goes ‘wrong’ (unless you believe it does). Each situation is here to help us cultivate unconditional love for ourselves, our unwanted emotions, or anything we have previously judged. This teaching has a lot of truth behind it, but it should never be used as a tool to make ourselves feel worse about something that we not only were destined to experience, but is a gift from the universe which is attempting to get us to a vibration where we can be in alignment with the things we dream about, by giving us opportunities to heal, and transcend judgments that had been holding us back in frequencies of fear. 2) “Let go” “The one who tries to surrender is what’s being surrendered.” ~ Matt Kahn Letting go is a term we are inundated with very often on the spiritual path. And for anyone who has attempted to let go of a relationship, an addiction, or any self-defeating behavior, they can tell you, it’s not that easy. The inherent misconception about this statement, “let go” is that the one hearing it is actually in charge of the letting go process. And that is where this teaching becomes another tool that we constantly berate ourselves for not being able to do. In all actuality, we don’t let go of anything, things let go of us when we no longer are at a vibration that resonates with the behavior or feeling, or that particular feeling/situation/person has nothing more to teach us. Yes of course, it will feel as though we are the ones making the choices, but energetically, complete and utter acceptance of ourselves and whatever we naturally choose to do is the only option. Once our shadow has been loved to death (literally) it will no longer require acting out in order to get our attention. 3) “If you’re not feeling good/happy/positive all the time, you’ve done something wrong” “There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” ~ Carl Jung The human experience is very much sprinkled with pain and suffering. There is no getting around this. Yes, a negative emotion is trying to show us that there is an unhealed aspect, or out of alignment belief system that may be holding us back from happiness, but never think you have done something “wrong” if you are in pain. By simply asking the universe, “how is this here to help me?” anytime a painful circumstance or feeling arises, we begin to align with faith, which moves us along our journey in a more fulfilling manner. 4) “Don’t talk about or think about anything ‘negative’ or else you will manifest more of it.” Here is another law of attraction teaching that has gone awry. When we begin to understand the energetics behind how life works, we begin to see how this teaching can actually take us away from residing in a higher vibration. Imagine a child that is told never to talk about it’s painful feelings, or how he/she felt sick that day, or anything that happens in their life that wasn’t exactly what they wanted or else they would get more of it. The child would begin to feel not only completely dismissed but also would do anything to distract himself from their pain for fear of ‘manifesting more of it’. Now we have a soul living in the energy of fear of doing or saying the wrong thing all of their life rather than openly accepting life as it comes. Energetically, honesty (with ourselves) is a much higher vibration than ‘pretending’ to feel how we don’t feel just so we don’t manifest more painful feelings. We are meant to embrace our humanity, be ok with ‘what is’ of our present moment, and show compassion to ourselves. This is what cultivates a loving (high) vibration, completely denying who we are, how we feel and trying to hide our emotions from ourselves keeps us stuck. 5) “More understanding or knowledge is the key to happiness and fulfillment”- Many people spend entire lifetimes in the pursuit of devouring more information in the hope that one day they will stumble across the golden grail of knowledge that will give them the fulfillment they truly seek. And while it is not ‘wrong’ to want to learn about things on the spiritual journey, one must not fool itself that any amount of knowledge will allow them to bypass the healing process that must take place for awakening to occur. Awakening is very much an energetic process that involves us facing the deepest and darkest parts of our psyche head on. Knowledge always helps to point us in the right direction and helps with insight, but it can’t do the inner work for us. Image Sources: Inner self meditating by the water
